New York City's court system spans five boroughs and dozens of courthouses. Understanding the structure helps attorneys manage their caseloads and identify when per diem coverage makes sense.
NYC Court Structure
The primary courts in NYC include:
- Supreme Court — handles civil cases above $25,000, with separate civil and criminal divisions in each borough
- Civil Court — handles civil claims up to $50,000, small claims up to $10,000, and commercial claims
- Housing Court — part of Civil Court, handles landlord-tenant matters including nonpayment, holdover, and HP proceedings
- Family Court — handles family law matters including custody, support, and protective orders
- Surrogate's Court — handles probate, estate administration, and guardianship
The Multi-Borough Challenge
Many firms have cases in multiple boroughs simultaneously. A firm might have a compliance conference in Kings County Supreme Court, a Housing Court appearance in Manhattan, and a deposition in the Bronx — all on the same day. Per diem coverage solves this logistical challenge.
Instant Per Diem Attorneys covers all five boroughs. See our NYC coverage page for details.
